At the Awards for Engineering Excellence gala on April 10 in Vancouver, McElhanney was honoured by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - BC Chapter (ACEC-BC) with an Award of Merit in the Soft Engineering category for its development and use of a custom mobile GIS application (called Vertisee) for the proposed Coastal GasLink pipeline corridor in northern BC.
The Coastal GasLink project had critical project milestones that required large amounts data to be collected with minimal site visits, processed rapidly, and made available to decision makers within a short time frame. McElhanney met this challenge with a unique combination of mobile mapping and GIS technologies. All assets, such as roads, bridges, and culverts, were displayed in Vertisee, within their geographic contexts, and were viewable on a basemap of orthophoto imagery and/or LiDAR data. Users could easily click into any of the 14,000 unique assets to view all available information—the “data behind the data.” See the project description on the ACEC-BC website.
The annual awards, now in its 26th year, recognizes excellence in the BC engineering sector. Awards were given in five categories: Buildings, Municipal & Civil Infrastructure, Transportation & Bridges, Energy & Industry, and Soft Engineering. Over 40 submissions were received this year, including 13 in the Soft Engineering category.
