The objectives of the Golden Ears Bridge were to ease chronic traffic congestion and backups on the Port Mann Bridge and Albion Ferry, and to promote economic growth by improving connectivity between the municipalities.
As a key member of a multi-consultant team, McElhanney designed the main bridge geometrics and associated roadway components. McElhanney's concept included refinements to the bridge geometrics to minimize cost and enhance functionality, four roundabouts to improve traffic flow and safety and attractive pedestrian/cyclist trails to promote alternate modes of transportation. McElhanney also provided environmental consulting services, including compensation and preservation of the environmentally sensitive Katzie Slough and drainage improvements in surrounding farmland.
