Established in 1910, McElhanney’s family of companies, including McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd and McElhanney Land Surveys Ltd, provide integrated surveying, engineering, mapping and specialty professional services to clients responsible for the development of resource industries, communities, and infrastructure across western Canada and beyond.
The McElhanney family of companies are wholly owned and managed by their senior employees,

1910Founded by William G. McElhanney in 1910.
1912-14Survey of 480 km of the 124th meridian and 55th parallel in central BC.
1930Logging railway surveys pay salaries throughout the Depression years.
1949McElhanney is a key player in the development of Alcan’s giant smelter in Kitimat, BC.
1950In 1957, the company pioneers the use and applications of photogrammetry.
1953-55Survey work begins in northeastern BC for the oil industry.
Mid 1950sMcElhanney crews survey portions of the Trans Mountain pipeline - the first of its kind in Canada.
1959McElhanney surveys the Mekong River Delta- the first of many international projects.
1960Aerial mapping projects in the Prairies make use the company’s own aircraft and camera.
1961The first route location survey for a microwave telecommunications system is completed.
1964By 1969, 50,000 kms of microwave routes in more than a
dozen countries are surveyed.
1967A broad range of civil and municipal engineering services are introduced.
1970A major acquisition in Alberta leads to a highly successful oil and gas surveying operation.
1971McElhanney gains strong reputation in offshore surveying and drill rig positioning.
1972The company supports exploration operations such as Hibernia and
1977The Lougheed Highway in Vancouver, BC
is the first major transportation project.
1981Acquisition of two Global Positioning Navigators is the beginning of today’s GPS technology.
1983A surveying scholarship is established
at the University of Calgary, AB.
1984McElhanney receives a British Columbia export award for international and export performance.
1985Involvement in many major BC highway design assignments.
1990McElhanney's Transportation division is expanded to Alberta.
1994Testing of orthophoto soft copy workstations marks the beginning of today’s GIS environment.
1996Petroleum division is expanded into projects for the Alberta government.
2000Acquisition of Terratech provides the capability to offer GIS software sales and training.
2000One of the first surveying and mapping companies to receive Certificate of Recognition (COR).
2002-04Expertise proves valuable in landmine infested regions of Cambodia and tsunami-ravaged Indonesia.
2006LiDAR laser mapping becomes new line of business
2007McElhanney sponsors Olympian Sara Renner and Paralympian Matt Hallat.
