Satellite Imagery
McElhanney is a licensed distributor of optical and radar satellite imagery from numerous sources. See below for a complete list of satellite imagery available from us at this time.

The selection and availability of high resolution satellite imagery today provides an affordable database for applications such as:

  • Mineral exploration
  • Forest management
  • Agricultural monitoring
  • Crop forecasting
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Land Use Management
  • Disaster planning

McElhanney is a licensed distributor of optical and radar satellite imagery. Optical satellite imagery is used for applications which require interpretation based on the colour, or spectral reflectance, of features coming from different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some examples are natural colour images for urban maps and colour infrared images for detecting insect infestation in trees. Radar satellite imagery is used for areas with constant cloud cover, fog or haze, or require near-real time images for disasters such as forest fires and oil spills. Some of the factors to consider when selecting satellite imagery are listed in the tables below. Let us use our expertise to help you select the appropriate image for your needs.

McElhanney is pleased to announce that we are now an authorized reseller of TerraSAR-X satellite imagery.

McElhanney is pleased to announce that we are now an authorized reseller to GeoEye, the largest commercial remote sensing company in the world. One meter black & white and four meter colour satellite imagery (IKONOS and OrbView) are now available from McElhanney for clients worldwide. With stereo imaging ability from the GeoEye satellites, McElhanney can also produce detailed topographical maps for client's projects around the world using softcopy photogrammetry.
McElhanney is a distributor of high-resolution SPOT-5 satellite imagery. We can also provide you with Landsat, Quickbird, IKONOS, ASTER, RADARSAT and others, depending on the requirements of your project.

About TerraSAR-X
TerraSAR-X is a side-looking X-Band synthetic aperture radar satellite. It can provide imagery in a variety of formats, from a high resolution "spotlight" that covers a 10 by 5 km area at 1 meter resolution to a scanSAR image that can cover a 100 by 150 km strip at up to 16 meter resolution. Other features include:

  • Sensor that penetrates cloud, smoke and haze (weather independent)
  • Up to 1m ground resolution (1m, 3m, and 16m options)
  • Multiple polarizations to bring out structures (HH, VH, HV, VV)

TerraSAR-X imagery is used for projects that involve:

  • Structural and topographic information
  • Identifying points of access (roads, rail, rivers, trails, etc)
  • Planning fieldwork
Imagery from TerraSAR-X can also be fused with optical satellite imagery for further uses. See below for examples of TerraSAR-X imagery (click on the thumbnail to view the full sized image in a pop up window).

New Zealand, Mt. Egmont (Taranaki) - Stripmap Acquisition (3m resolution, reduced), Jul. 15, 2007; polarisation: VV

Germany, Noerdlinger Ries - Spotlight Acquisition (1m resolution, reduced), Jul. 01, 2007; polarisation: HH

Example uses for IKONOS and Quickbird high resolution imagery:

  • The exploration geologist that needs a highly detailed image for a project area that has no air photo coverage.
  • The cartographer that needs to produce a high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM).
  • The natural resource manager that needs to update, or increase the detail in vegetation or topography for Provincial/State government maps.
  • Provincial/State or federal government emergency preparedness mapping for forest fire, floods or other natural disasters.
  • 3D visualization for forestry or transportation applications.
