West Stewart Street Revitalization, Vanderhoof, BC
Client: The City of Vanderhoof
The West Stewart Street Revitalization project involved one block of streetscape and landscaping improvements including the use of coloured sidewalks and decorative stamped concrete. Sidewalk, curbs and pavement overlay were included in the design. Curb geometry was revised to include landscaped bulb-outs to enhance the pedestrian environment.
The focal point of the design was the front of the post office, a central location in Vanderhoof used by all residents on a nearly daily basis.
Special design challenges included the undergrounding of overhead electrical and telephone cables. The design specified a horizontally-bored crossing that prevented the closure of Burrard Avenue, one of the primary road links for Vanderhoof. McElhanney was involved from start to finish, including making presentations to Council and contract administration.
