Calgary is a true example of the lively Spirit of the Canadian West. It is a dynamic city with major festivals and events throughout the year. Residents enjoy a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, theatres, museums and world class sports facilities, a legacy of the Winter Olympics held here in 1988. Fans strongly support their professional football team, the Calgary Stampeders, and their professional ice hockey team, the Calgary Flames.

Calgary employees enjoy the annual Calgary Stampede. The city is world-famous for the Calgary Stampede, an annual July event that celebrates Western Heritage. During the 10-day event, residents and tourists alike catch cowboy fever and develop a burning desire to wear a Stetson hat and shout ya-hoo through the streets of Calgary. The fever subsides after 10 days but is sure to return after 12 months.

While tourists have to come from all over the world, Calgarians are accustomed to the breathtaking views of Banff and Lake Louise an hour and a half away by car. They only have to look west to catch a glimpse of the majestic Canadian Rockies. Residents take advantage of the area's natural beauty by participating in summer outdoor activities such as golf, hiking, running, camping and fishing and winter outdoor activities such as downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, skating and curling. In the spring, they can ski in the mountains and golf in the green valleys on the same day. The cold winter season is broken up by warm Chinook winds from Mother Nature.
