Commitment
McElhanney is committed to a proactive and systematic approach to health, safety and environment. It is our objective to protect our employees from personal injury and health hazards and provide a workplace where:
- Health and safety are values that are considered with every priority and is equal to production, schedule and cost,
- Everyone feels responsible for health and safety and does something about it on a daily basis,
- Employees proactively care for the health and safety of themselves and others, and
- Employees are empowered to make continuous improvements.
Expectations
McElhanney employees and contractors are expected to:
- Recognize and assess workplace hazards and manage risk to an acceptable level,
- Comply with all applicable regulatory requirements, company health and safety policies, procedures, practices and rules,
- Be intolerant to unsafe conditions and behaviours that contribute to incidents, and
- Be proactive in the prevention of incidents and injuries.
Leadership Accountability
Leadership is accountable for:
- Systematically managing health, safety and environmental risks, and opportunities as an integral part of our business,
- Leading by example,
- Encouraging and fostering open and meaningful communication of relevant HSE information on a regular basis with management, employees and the public,
- Being actively involved in matters relating to health and safety, and
- Positively reinforcing behaviour that shows people are working in a safe and conscientious manner.
Performance
McElhanney sets realistic goals and assess performance metrics to continually improve HSE leading performance indicators that contribute to business success. Some of the leading indicators that we measure include:
- Worksite inspections,
- Hazard reporting,
- Near miss reporting, and
- Safety meetings.
We strive to work with all of our stakeholders to enhance health, safety and environmental performance.

| Partnerships Health and Safety Certificate of Recognition (COR) |

The COR recognizes that we, in keeping with the principals of Partnerships, have developed and implemented an effective workplace health and safety management system, and have met or exceeded the standard for Partnerships through an independent evaluation of our health and safety system. McElhanney holds a current COR in both Alberta and British Columbia. |

McElhanney is registered and has declared to be compliant with the PSC's Industry Recommended Practice (IRP) 16 – 2003 entitled "Basic Safety Awareness Training". New employees at McElhanney are provided with an orientation that provides awareness-level training in the areas of legislation, hazards and safe work practices associated with working in the upstream and mid-stream sectors of the oil & gas industry. |
| Safety Stand Down Week |

An oil & gas industry initiative, 'Safety Stand Down Week' (typically 1 week in January) is a designated time for Executive Managers and CEO's to talk about safety issues directly with front-line workers.
McElhanney’s President, O'Brian Blackall, BCLS, supports this initiative and has participated by visiting all of McElhanneys branches and engaging employees in a "Tool BoxTalk" to discuss and demonstrate his commitment to health and safety at and away from work.
