Scholarship Overview

In support of our ongoing allyship with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, this scholarship is designed to celebrate and increase the visibility of talented 2SLGBTQIA+ students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) while upholding our unwavering commitment to creating opportunities where members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community have equal opportunity to grow their careers. The ideal candidate has demonstrated strong leadership and exemplary allyship within and to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community with a passion for a STEM career that applies to McElhanney.

Selected recipients interested in completing a STEM education (see applicable programs below) are awarded up to $5,000 to use toward tuition, textbooks, supplies, and living expenses (on-campus accommodations).

Applications for McElhanney’s Pride Scholarship are open from September 5th, 2023 to November 3rd, 2023.

Candidates are also encouraged to apply for opportunities to join McElhanney as a co-op student or new graduate during our regular recruitment cycles (winter, summer, and fall), which will be advertised on McElhanney’s website and via most post-secondary institutions’ co-op communications.

Step 1: Select Your Career Path

Hands-on career training will be available through full-time or co-op opportunities, and reserved for individuals interested in one or more of the following current career paths. In your application, please select your career path of interest. If you have more than one career path of interest, please rank them from most to least interested.

Step 2: Confirm Your Eligibility

To qualify for this scholarship, please ensure you meet the following criteria:
  1. You are passionate about advancing and promoting equal opportunity for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in STEM.
  2. You have displayed community leadership, involvement in industry, or commitment to high academic achievement.
  3. You are enrolled in a diploma or degree program and have completed at least one year of post-secondary education at an accredited Canadian institution in one of the mentioned career paths.

Step 3: Application Instructions

A complete application must be submitted on or before November 3rd, 2023, and include the following documents to receive consideration:

  1. A resume that summarizes your experience. 
  2. A cover letter including a personal statement of 1-2 pages that addresses the following questions:
    • What inequalities have you witnessed or are aware of regarding members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community pursuing an education and career in STEM?
    • What are some of the personal experiences, specific projects, or initiatives that have influenced your thinking around 2SLGBTQIA+ and STEM?
    • What has motivated you to be an advocate for change?
    • Why should you be selected as the recipient of this scholarship?
    • How would this scholarship support your career plans?

When answering these questions, you may wish to consider how your studies or future work in STEM will contribute to the improvement and growth of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in STEM and provide us with any other information you feel elevates your qualities as a candidate.

As the recipient of McElhanney’s Pride Scholarship, you will receive:

Financial Support:

This scholarship offers up to $5,000 for tuition, textbooks, supplies, and living expenses (on-campus accommodations).

Mentorship

Industry Mentorship Opportunity:

Be paired with a McElhanney industry professional who will support you in achieving your professional goals. Together, you will discuss training, coaching, or career aspirations of interest to you.

Co-op Opportunity

Co-op / Internship Opportunity:

You will be awarded a paid co-op / internship that aligns with your career plans and McElhanney’s hiring needs. All scholarship applicants will be considered for current and upcoming McElhanney career opportunities. In addition, all applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to any opportunities directly at www.mcelhanney.com/careers.
