Valleyview Airport Runway Study

2021 | Valleyview, AB

Previous reports indicated that the Valleyview Airport runway surface lifecycle was nearing its end and needed to be rehabilitated. The airport is used primarily for local pilots and critical air ambulance services. The Town of Valleyview partnered with McElhanney who enlisted a regional airport expert to visit the site and provide recommendations for next steps. Recommendations included geotechnical testing and a 1m grid survey of the surface.

The geotechnical testing was completed by a local firm to maintain keep cost manageable for the Town. Parkland Geo completed the testing within a tight schedule and provided expert analysis for the existing soil and asphalt conditions.

McElhanney quickly realized that a survey of the level of detail requested would not be cost effective and would not provide the data necessary for identifying problem areas on the Town’s runway. As a solution, we recommended that the Town utilize our Mobile Laser Scanning Team for the survey. This approach allowed us to provide significantly higher data quality in half a day compared to conventional survey methods which would have taken nearly a week.
