Campbell River Bridge – Seismic and Condition Renewal

McElhanney completed the seismic and condition renewal of the Campbell River Bridge, a 76.2 m single-span steel through-truss bridge supported on reinforced concrete abutments. Working with the Ministry, our team developed cost-effective seismic retrofit concepts and selected a base isolation solution that exceeded the project’s seismic performance and service level criteria while staying within budget.
In addition to improving the bridge’s seismic performance by replacing the original steel bearings with lead-rubber isolation bearings, the renewal included recoating structural steel beneath the deck and within the roadway splash zone, installing stainless-steel shrouds around deck openings, concrete deck renewal, deck joint replacement, and structural steel repairs. Drawing on prior scoping work and construction supervision experience, McElhanney developed accurate cost estimates, with the awarded tender cost coming within 2.5% of both the priced engineer’s estimate and the earlier renewal options analysis adjusted for inflation and final scope.
McElhanney provided:
- Seismic retrofit concept development, including evaluation of strength-based and base isolation solutions in collaboration with the Ministry
- Detailed design for the selected base isolation concept, including replacement of original steel bearings with lead-rubber isolation bearings
- Condition renewal design for recoating structural steel, deck renewal, deck joint replacement, stainless-steel shrouds, and structural steel repairs
- Cost estimating, tender document support, and construction-phase support to help manage risk and keep the project on budget
