Burnaby Lake Pedestrian Bridge

2019-2026 | Burnaby, British Columbia

The City needed a safe new pedestrian and cycling connection between Burnaby Lake Park and Deer Lake Park to close a 5 km gap in crossings over Highway 1—improving access to park amenities and unlocking commuter and recreational active transportation while managing multi-agency and environmental considerations.

McElhanney has led planning and development since 2019, coordinating a multidisciplinary team (architecture, structural/civil, landscape, environmental, survey, archaeological, electrical, and lighting) to advance the project through site selection and conceptual design. We delivered targeted investigations and extensive public, interest holder, and Council engagement to identify the site that provides the greatest community value, while early design optioning helped minimize work in watercourses and riparian areas and reduce tree and habitat impacts. The team also supported the City with a successful senior-government grant application through Infrastructure Canada, helping position the project for detailed design and procurement.

McElhanney provided:

  • Project management services including coordination of architectural and structural engineering subconsultants, interest holder engagement and coordination, and communication with City staff and Burnaby City Council through multiple presentations and workshops
  • Development and execution of a multiple account evaluation methodology for the identification and selection of a preferred bridge location for further development during design
  • Civil design including development of trail alignments and connection to local and regional networks and mitigation of impact to existing utilities and third-party infrastructure
  • Environmental, geotechnical, archaeological and arborist investigations and reporting
