Hwy 7 Dewdney Bridge Replacement

The Ministry of Transportation & Transit needed to replace the aging Dewdney Bridge on Hwy 7 with a more resilient structure while maintaining critical two-lane access to Nicomen Island throughout construction. The project required bridge and highway design, utilities coordination, environmental permitting, and careful staging within a constrained site affected by private properties, diking authorities, liquefiable soils, and complex existing infrastructure.
McElhanney provided conceptual and detailed design, engineering services during construction, and construction supervision for the replacement of the timber trestle Dewdney Bridge spanning Nicomen Slough. The new 185.7 m five-span bridge was built offline from the existing structure to keep traffic moving during construction. Our team also delivered electrical and utilities design services and environmental permitting support, helping optimize the bridge profile through innovative steel I-girder design and a successful hydraulic clearance variance that improved flood resiliency while minimizing impacts to the surrounding community.
