Baxter Bridge Replacement

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit required a safe, durable replacement for the aging single-lane Baxter Bridge while maintaining traffic during construction and minimizing impacts to adjacent properties and environmentally sensitive habitat along the Shuswap River.

McElhanney delivered a conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design for a new 134 m two-lane steel girder bridge, evaluating four roadway alignments and three bridge options per alignment through a multiple account evaluation. Advancing a three-span structure on a new upstream alignment enabled traffic to remain on the existing bridge during construction. The design also supported environmentally sensitive construction through incremental launching and reduced long-term maintenance risk by limiting deck joints to the abutments.
