Highway 1 Ford Road to Tappen Valley Road Upgrades

This Highway 1 four-laning project included 4.3 km of highway upgrades, 8 km of new connecting and frontage roads, reconfiguration of the Sunnybrae Road intersection, relocation of the Bolton Road intersection, two grade-separated interchanges, and elimination of the Tappen Valley Road intersection.
McElhanney served as prime consultant and delivered multidisciplinary design, structural coordination, drainage, environmental investigation, survey, traffic analysis, right-of-way support, and regulatory approvals for the Ministry of Transportation and Transit. The project included design advancement for bridge and culvert structures, fish-passable stream crossings, extensive stakeholder coordination, and design integration for complex site conditions including rock excavation, moisture-sensitive soils, agricultural land, railway clearances, and adjacent First Nation lands.
McElhanney provided:
- Design management and drainage management
- Highway design including detailed design, engineering cost estimates, and tender documents
- Environmental services and support for stakeholder and public consultation
- Traffic counts, analysis, and design; preliminary design assessment; functional and detailed design
- Survey, construction documents, cost estimates, right-of-way acquisition, and railway and utilities coordination
- Regulatory approvals from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change
