This year, McElhanney, in partnership with the Ending Violence Association of BC, the BC Lions, and the BC Centre for Women in the Trades (BCCWITT), launched the “Be More Than a Bystander” workshop for all staff. The initiative aims to drive positive change and lead the way in addressing gender-based harassment, bullying, and discrimination within the architecture, engineering, construction, environmental, and surveying industries.
What sets this program apart is that McElhanney team members serve as facilitators. Driven by a passion for change, they focus on building understanding around how each of us can contribute to a more inclusive and respectful workplace. All facilitators identify as male, highlighting the important role men in challenging and speaking up against the toxic culture of bullying and harassment within the industry.
Through open discussion, real-life scenarios, and hands-on strategies, participants learn how to safely intervene and support their coworkers. Beyond theory, the workshop empowers people to act, whether that means speaking up in the moment, offering support after the fact, or helping to foster a more inclusive environment every day. It has also served to inspire an ongoing journey to deepen awareness, strengthen equity skills, and engage in volunteer projects that drive lasting change.
As we advance with new projects and future challenges, keeping respect central to our actions remains essential. The “Be More Than a Bystander” workshop is a testament to our commitment to positive change and a brighter, safer future for everyone at McElhanney and across the industry we serve.
